The South West part of Pelion is the most diverse and unique part of the Pelion peninsula with well-travelled visitors coming to discover and enjoy its gems. South Pelion is one of the most sought-after destination in Greece - a unique peninsula of Centaurs, forests and stunning beaches nestled in secluded coves with crystal-clear turquoise waters. On this page, you will find out in which ways you can reach and explore this extraordinary region:

Flying to Volos the region's main town: This is the closest airport to Pelion named Nea Anchialos, located about 30 km from Volos. You can fly directly to Volos and then easily access Pelion by car.

Flying to Skiathos island: you can reach Skiathos by plane and then take a taxi boat to Platanias or Katigiorgi, which are just 5 nautical miles from South Pelion.
Driving: Pelion can be easily reached by car. La Villa is a 4 hour highway drive from Athens airport and a 3 hour drive from Thessaloniki. Both Athens and Thessaloniki airports are connected with many international destinations and offer extensive car rental services, allowing you the freedom to explore and discover Pelion at your own pace.

Afetes (or Niaou, which was the historic name of the village in the old days) is a small, picturesque mountainous village 27km from Volos. It is built in the form of an amphitheater with olive groves and the view of the Pagasitic Gulf from here is magnificent. The large paved main square offers shade and cool under the plain trees in the hot summer months. There are two tavernas where you can enjoy a tasty meal. At the entrance to the village near to the main parking facilities, there is a old path that will take you on a beautiful walk to the beach of Abovou in Afissos.

Kottes is beautiful quaint fishing hamlet by the sea, 66km from Volos. It offers a beautiful view of the Pagasitic Gulf and its surrounding mountains. It is just 6km away from the hilltop village of Trikeri. This small fishing village with the traditional fisherman houses is like a scene from a postcard. It is a perfect place for long summer relaxing lunches by the sea.

At the port you can find several fish tavernas, which serve fresh fish caught by the local fishermen, local wine, tsipouro and home made traditional foods. You can take a nice walk through the olive groves, following the path out of the hamlet and near by the spring water fountain, towards Trikeri. From here if you keep walking you will reach the small fishing village of Agia Kiriaki, known for its pirates. Here you can also enjoy seafood and local wine and tsipouro in the tavernas near the port.

Another near spot is Palio Trikeri (Old Trikeri) or Nisi Tis Panagias (Panagias Island) as it is known today. This is a very beautiful quiet island, and has a wonderful scenery. You can sail to the island by boat from Alogopirgo, which is located just before Trikeri. In 2022 the international production of Oscar - winner Fernando Trueba's Haunted Heart was shot in Kottes.

This small island, located at the southernmost point of the Pagasitic Gulf, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. At the island's summit, you'll find the Monastery of Panagias, dating back to 1825, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. Evidence of ancient occupation during the Mycenaean Period has been uncovered through archaeological findings on the island.
